The History of Egyptian Cotton

When you hear the term “Egyptian Cotton” we would not be surprised if you thought of luxury, silky cotton, high thread count,

and of some of the best bedding around. But it’s not an overnight success. Egyptian cotton has been around for a long time and is set to

be a favourite and sustainable fabric of the future.

Origins in the River Nile delta

As you might expect from its name, Egyptian cotton™ comes from the fertile north African banks of the river Nile. Having been grown to create

fabrics, the plant has grown easily in Egypt, but it didn’t start international commercial production until the beginning of the 19th century. Louis Alexis Jumel, a Frenchman, began the cultivation and development of a uniquely Egyptian variety with longer fibres which spun into a superior soft yarn.

With the ruler of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, backing him, production took off, spreading across the country and eventually becoming responsible

for more than 93% of Egypt’s income by the end of the century.

Egyptian Cotton in Europe

Cotton has been grown in Asia, Africa and the Americas for many centuries but by the middle of the 19th century, production in the US had been heavily impacted by the US War of Independence, meaning that European cotton manufacturers had to find quality cotton elsewhere.

The manufacturers turned to Egypt.

The demand for cotton which resembled silk pushed up the prices and the addition of the Suez Canal and Aswan Dam brought Egypt one

of the most successful and lucrative businesses in the world.

Why is Egyptian Cotton the best?

If you buy sheets made with Egyptian Cotton™, you will see how it differs from the more common varieties. Its longer, finer fibres can be spun

into a yarn with a much smaller diameter and the fibres are at least 1⅜ inch long. This means that the resulting fabric will be smoother, silkier,

and lighter. Being porous, Egyptian Cotton™ yarn absorbs more liquids meaning that the dying process gives more vibrant colours and remain

bright throughout the lifetime of the fabric.

A lighter fabric also means that it is extremely comfortable to wear and sleep in. A more superior, breathable, sustainable, strong and

natural material with all the luxury and softness of a high-end product.

The manufacturers producing our Egyptian cotton sheets and towels are all accredited by the Cotton Egypt Association certified as producing a product of genuine Giza Egyptian cotton. The certainty of true Egyptian Giza comes with all products manufactured in Egyptian nationalised industries.
